Image DescriptionOur FBCA band program begins in fourth grade and continues as an extracurricular graded elective through sixth grade.  Band meets before and/or after school depending upon the grade level.

Why band you may ask?
Band develops skills needed by the 21st century workforce: Critical thinking, creative problem solving, effective communication, team work, and more.

Cognition – Playing music improves development of neurons in a child’s brain. It also improves memory, and both of these cognitive abilities directly apply to improved studying for children.

Concentration – When kids study and play music, they are better able to concentrate and better understand their homework. Concentration skills directly impact the study habits of every child.

Skills – Certain skills improve when children play music, and these include problem solving and logic. Also, when playing music, kids’ thinking skills in the areas of idea organization, analysis and evaluation improve.

Discipline – Children who play music must have a certain level of discipline and work ethic to hone their skills, and they are apt to apply a similar level of tenaciousness to their studies.  A Columbia University study revealed that across socioeconomic levels, students in the arts are found to be more cooperative with teachers and peers, more self-confident, and better able to express their ideas.

Test Scores – Studies show middle school and high school students who participated in instrumental music performances scored significantly higher than their non-band peers in standardized tests. –University of Sarasota Study, Jeffrey Lynn Kluball; East Texas State University Study, Daryl Erick Trent

Worship – Man was created to bring glory to God. Our band program encourages students to develop the musical gifts they have received from God and use them for His honor and glory.

Praise the Lord.
Praise God in His sanctuary;
praise Him in His mighty heavens.
Praise Him for His acts of power;
praise Him for His surpassing greatness.
Praise Him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise Him with the harp and lyre,
praise Him with timbrel and dancing,
praise Him with the strings and pipe,
praise Him with the clash of cymbals,
praise Him with resounding cymbals.
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord.
Psalm 150 (NIV)

Dear Parents,

Learning to play an instrument can be a very rewarding experience.  I thoroughly enjoy helping children succeed as much as they can throughout the year and would look forward to working with your child to develop a deeper interest in music and particularly a band instrument.

Our band classes will be meeting on the following schedule:

Band Meeting Days and Times Start Date
“A” Band(2nd & 3rd year players) Tuesday & Thursday 7:30 a.m. TBD
“B” Band(1st year players) Monday & Wednesday7:30 a.m. TBD
“B” Band students will not need an instrument until mid September

There will be a one-time band fee of $30.00 for the year.  Each beginning student will be required to furnish an approved instrument and the Traditions of Excellence, Level One book for the appropriate instrument.  Students will have the opportunity in Music class to try and make sounds on the instruments to determine which instrument they prefer.  The instrument can be purchased or rented at any music store.  Used instruments can be purchased at music stores, pawnshops or the newspaper.  Be careful to have used instruments checked out and make sure they are in good playing condition.  The books can be purchased at any music store.  “A” Band students will need to purchase the Traditions of Excellence, Level 2 book when it is determined to be needed by Mrs. Patterson.

There will also be a yearly fee for the SmartMusic computer program and a one-time fee for a microphone to use with the program, $70.  SmartMusic is a tool for students to use at home to enhance practicing.  There will be a band parent meeting at 5:45, on the night of the open house in the music room to help with understanding of the SmartMusic program.  This meeting is for parents of first year players only.  Smart Music must be ordered and downloaded online at www.smartmusic.com

I look forward to working with any student that wants to learn to play an instrument.  It is such a joy to see students develop a love and appreciation for music.  If you have further questions please feel free to leave me a message in the school office.  I will return your call as soon as possible.

Sincerely,

Gina Patterson
